Elderly Home Care

Living in an ageing society means that many more people are facing difficult decisions about how to meet their care and support needs as they grow older. The COVID-19 pandemic has made many families concerned about having an elderly relative living in a residential home or a care home, and it is well known that the majority of older people would prefer to age in the familiar and comfortable environment of their own home.

Indeed, as the Live-in Care Hub reported in their pre-pandemic 2019 Better at Home report“97 per cent of people DON’T want to move into institutional care if they become ill or less able to cope.”

At ENA, we provide live-in elderly care that is dignified, respectful and personalised to each individual client. Our live-in carers work side-by-side with the person to maximise their independence, choice and control, and because our support is provided in the person’s own home, it means there is no separation from a spouse, partner or any pets that the person has.

What is elderly care?

Our elderly home care services support older people to live in their own home, surrounded by their own possessions and following their own routines, with their care needs being met by our highly trained and vetted live-in carers

The elderly people we support have many different needs, from companionship and general support with mobility and tasks of daily living, to care for specific conditions that include:

We also support people with complex care needs and people who are approaching end-of-life.

If the condition you or your relative lives with isn’t listed above, please contact us to discuss your needs. If we can provide the support you need we will endeavour to, and with enough notice we can often build training for our staff around a specific condition.

Reasons to consider live-in elderly care

Our clients have many reasons for choosing our live-in elderly care service, including

A relative is ageing alone, with family members a long way away.
The person is struggling to look after themselves or their home.
The person doesn’t want to leave their home to go into a care home, or a couple are ageing together and don’t want to be parted by one partner going into a care home.
The person is struggling with mobility or has become prone to falls and needs some support to remain safe at home.
The person has had one or more hospital admissions and they/their family are keen to avoid further inpatient stays as much as possible.
The person is becoming more frail/has long-term health conditions and needs a flexible package of in-home support that can change as their needs change.

Key elements of ENA 24-hour care

ENA elderly care is highly personalised, side-by-side care and support that includes:

  • Professional care to manage any health conditions that the person has, including help with medication, attending appointments, any rehabilitation that the person needs to undertake (perhaps because of a stroke), and any diet or exercise regimes that the person is following.
  • Any personal care support that the person needs. This could include help with washing, dressing, using the toilet and any pampering regimes that the person enjoys.
  • Nutrition and hydration support including meal planning, food preparation and help to eat and drink.
  • Help to remain mobile. We will undertake risk assessments for falls and support a person to minimise their risk of falls.
  • Emotional and mental health support, and friendship to alleviate any loneliness and isolation the person is experiencing.
  • Support to get out and about, including to shop or participate in leisure or social activities.
  • Help with hobbies and activities that the person enjoys.
  • Support with domestic tasks as required, including looking after pets.

The benefits of ENA live-in elderly care

In-home elderly care will mean different things to different older people, but some of the benefits associated with having a live-in carer to support you or your relative include:

Personalised, one-to-one support that enables the person to live in their own home, with their own possessions, maintain their own routines and live their life as they wish to.

Peace of mind for the person and their family that they will have the long-term support that they need to age in their own home, with a partner/spouse if they have one. ENA live-in carers keep daily electronic care and medication records, which we can provide access to (with consent) if family members are geographically spread out and would like to monitor the care that is being delivered.

Physical and mental health support, including specialist care for common health conditions and companionship for the person.

The ability for the person and their family/friends to spend their time together as they wish, rather than family members/friends being unpaid carers.

A comprehensive, frequently reviewed care plan that is created before our live-in care begins with the full involvement of the person needing care and their family (if they have family members involved in their life). This plan enables our live-in carer to get to know the person needing care as quickly as possible to ensure the most optimum support is provided from the very first day of our live-in care.

Help with housework, laundry, cooking and anything else that is needed at home.

Flexible and sustainable long-term care that can change as the person’s needs change.

What in-home elderly care services do ENA offer?

We provide short or long-term live-in elderly care in a person’s own home, where they may have lived for many years and be reluctant to leave. Our live-in carers can provide all of the care and support that a residential home or a care home could provide, but crucially the person doesn’t have to leave and/or sell their home.

Our support enables an elderly person to have uninterrupted, one-to-one assistance from a live-in carer who will remain with them for 8-12 weeks before another carer comes in to support the person. This type of continuity of care ensures an elderly person and their live-in carer can get to know each other really well, with many of our clients and carers becoming friends.

We aim to ensure an elderly person’s comfort and safely, helping them to cope with any changes in their health and maximising their independence. Our live-in carers will support an elderly person to maintain their routine and live their life on their terms, free from the more rigid structures of care home life.

If you are unsure if live-in elderly care is right for you or your relative, you could take advantage of our 2-4 week trial to see if it fits yours or your relative’s needs and expectations.

What is involved in setting up elderly care at home?

As we look to set up your elderly home care service, we will aim to match you or your relative with a live-in carer who shares some of your interests or hobbies, and whose company you will enjoy. We want our clients to feel relaxed and happy with their live-in carer, so compatibility is vital. If, in the unlikely event, you feel your live-in carer isn’t right for you we will aim to find someone more suitable.

We will visit you/your relative to complete an assessment with absolutely no obligation to proceed. During this visit we will create a bespoke care plan, with yours/your relative’s full involvement, and this will be regularly reviewed if you proceed with having our elderly home care. Alongside documenting all of yours/your relative’s healthcare needs, we will also ensure we are fully aware of your wishes and preferences. All of our live-in carers know the importance of never taking over your home or doing more than you would wish for them to do.

To ensure comprehensive and safe support, your live-in carer will be fully trained and vetted to give you complete peace of mind. Many of our live-in carers have extensive experience in supporting older people and bring a wealth of knowledge and good practice to their in-home elderly care provision.

We know that engaging with care services is often a big step for an older person, and we are committed to working with our clients and their families (if our clients wish for this to happen) every step of the way. With consent, we can provide regular updates for family members and help to keep everyone connected either virtually or in-person.

Is elderly care at home the right option for me/my family?

Live-in elderly care is the perfect choice for any older person who wants to remain in their own home to age as they wish to, alongside their spouse or partner if they have one, and in the company of any pets that live with them.

It’s highly personalised, flexible and dignified support that gives families of elderly individuals reassurance that their relative has professional care and support at home to help them manage any physical health conditions that they have. Crucially, it also helps to stave off isolation and loneliness and supports good mental health for an elderly person by bringing new opportunities, perspectives, purpose and motivation into an older person’s life, as well as companionship, joy and fun.

We believe ageing should be a positive experience, and with our gentle, side-by-side care and support we aim to make growing older for our clients all about living, laughing and loving life.

How much does in-home elderly care cost?

The cost of our live-in elderly care starts at £1,200 per week, rising to £1,400 per week if you are an elderly couple who both need care. Many people find it is highly cost-effective, particularly for couples who effectively pay double fees if both people move into a residential home or a care home.
